WebDefinition. Neutropenia is an abnormally low level of neutrophils in the blood. Neutrophils are white blood cells (WBCs) produced in the bone marrow that ingest bacteria. Neutropenia is sometimes called agranulocytosis or granulocytopenia because neutrophils make up about 60% of WBCs and have granules inside their cell walls. WebNeutropenia is defined as an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) of less than 1500 per microliter (1500/microL). Severe neutropenia is defined as less than 500 per microliter (500/microL). There are many reasons for neutropenia to occur, including autoimmune conditions, medications and viral infections, radiation treatment or chemotherapy.
