Woods was studying to be a drama instructor, and when he met up with Curnin the two started writing stage plays together, Adam directing and Cy acting in them. They also had a band going on the side, in which Adam played drums and Cy piano.

College friends Cy Curnin on vocals and Adam Woods on drums formed the group in London in 1979, initially calling themselves Portraits. The pair placed an ad for additional members, and recruited keyboardist Rupert Greenall, guitarist Tony McGrail and bassist Russell Mckenzie, the last of whom was later replaced by Charlie Barrett.
