WebMar 17, 2024 · For grins, I used my smoother on a piece of cherry and put two coats of 1 lb cut shellac on one half, followed by 3 coats of poly, and only 3 coats of poly on the other half. The shellac half looks better, not as blotchy, and smoother to the touch. I don't see any problems with adhesion. The combination of a coat of shellac followed by a few coats of oil-base varnish will produce an attractive and durable natural finish.
WebJan 23, 2024 · Varnish and Poly can only be use over Shellac that has had the wax removed. Jeff Jewitts book should have made this distinction. Maybe you missed it. Zinsser also makes regular shellac so make sure you buy the can that says Sealcoat on the front with 100% de-waxed shellac printed just below the label. One coat should be all you will need.

Water-based poly can have adhesion problems when applied over an oil-based stain that's not thoroughly cured. That's why you should always apply a barrier coat of dewaxed shellac to seal oil-based stain.
